OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the Centre is to develop and maintain an active information base, undertake multi-disciplinary scientific and technical research on disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and environmental management, and develop appropriate response options to aid decision makers for strategic policy planning in consonance with the changing global environment in areas such as energy, water, agriculture, biodiversity, health, coastal and marine ecology and to promote the development of knowledge, theory and practice of sustainable development in its various aspects including improvement in the level of human skills and capabilities for its realization.

The Centre provides consultancy services to Industrial Houses, Multi-national Groups, Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations as well as UN agencies on all matters relating to sector specific impacts of regional and local climate variability and climate change, integrated systems analysis of population and urbanization linkages, energy efficiency and sustainable use of natural resources for the socio-economic development in the developing countries of Asia and the Pacific. Our work facilitates Multi-national Groups and Companies to institutionalize and integrate corporate citizenship into their strategy, operations and policies, in all areas and at all levels to ensure proper environmental and safety regimes and to help business leverage its social, economic and human assets to attain success in a more just and sustainable world.

The research outputs of the Centre include provision of credible, context-specific climate information (through application of sophisticated screening tools in a wide range of project settings) and provide an analysis of the alternatives and options available for the future, suggest a desirable and optimal path to be followed, recommend an appropriate time frame and a realistic cost estimate for the proposed strategy of integrating adaptation measures within development planning to develop vision for the future. Our research and analysis on risk communication and risk assessment also provides the clients with strategic design, comprehensive implementation, and expert evaluation of health, safety and environmental issue-oriented risks.
